Arthur Radley group: Chapter 25:
What does Scout mean by: 'In the secret courts of men's hearts Atticus had no case. Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella opened her mouth and screamed.'?

In this statement, Scout is putting herself in the shoes of the men in Maycomb County. She has come to the realisation that as much as Atticus will bata Tom Robinson's innocence, in reality, the people have already made up their mind for the guilt of Tom Robinson. Obviously, this code of deception is kept in deep secrecy until the day of the trial, but in everyone's mind Atticus has no chance against the jury. Even if Tom Robinson was innocent, it would take much persuasion to alter the minds of Maycomb County. This is because Mr Robinson is a black man.
Mayella Ewell is a town local, but despite her being a outcast in Maycomb, she will still be superior to Tom Robinson. "To Kill A Mockingbird" was set in the time of white supremecy, which meant the coloured people living in Maycomb and all over America were treated disrespectfully and were not given equal opportunities. Tom Robinson was a dead man the minute Mayella Ewell opened her mouth because no one would believe his testomony, which meant that Mayella Ewell had successfully won the case without it even starting.
